By being constructed in a factory, you have peace of mind knowing that your new home started its construction with quality built right in. Factory efficiency results in reduced costs and the quality control results in a superior product. The idea of building homes, especially the components that make up a home, in a factory is not a recent phenomenon. By using automatic assembly equipment and repetitive assembly-line techniques, factories assemble component parts more efficiently and with greater consistency in product quality.

“The gabled roof is low, with broad, deep eaves that give the home its distinctive triangular shape,” Chambers explains. This roof pitch—often held up with large, sometimes decorative brackets—is ideal for cold climates, preventing large amounts of snow from accumulating on top of the house. The first historical documentation of the word chalet dates back to 1328, used to describe a simple log cabin built by a farmer in the Canton de Vaud in Switzerland.

Our home heritage is as multi-everything as Los Angeles itself — historical hybrids of imagination and redwood and whims in stone. In some cities, you make your dull row house distinct with the paint on the door or the flowers in the window boxes. Studio Shamshiri designed a custom table for the wood-paneled den, where a 1940s Turkish rug adds a pop of pattern. Much of the furniture was custom-made for the project, with other pieces sourced from manufacturers like Sancal, Dooor, Moooi, and Bonaldo.

A unique aspect of our prefab chalet homes is our exposed loft floor system. Instead of traditional floor trusses, our prefab chalet homes feature a 4×8 Douglas Fir joist with 2×6 Douglas Fir Tongue and Groove flooring on top. Therefore, when occupants are on the first floor, and they look up, they will see the all-Douglas Fir floor system instead of drywall ceilings. This design keeps the Douglas Fir aesthetic flowing throughout the first floor. Inside, the chalet-style house is often two stories tall and open concept. The main room almost always has an interior fireplace that helps offset any cold air that may filter in through the chalet’s large multipaned windows.

For most of history, the term “chalet” referred to any small house found in the mountains. Chalet-style houses are almost always two stories tall, and feature plenty of windows that fill the house with natural light. These windows are also meant to provide stellar views of the chalet’s surroundings, unifying the indoors with the outdoors. Chalet-style houses are possibly best known for their dramatic, triangular profile, with dramatically pitched roofs and overhanging eaves, and are usually covered in wooden shingles. These roofs are ideal for cold climates, since their slope prevents large amounts of snow from accumulating on top of the house.

Popular House Plans In Los Angeles, California

Traditional chalets have a small, compact footprint that requires a minimal amount of excavation, a design feature necessary for the steep, uneven terrain they frequented. Oftentimes, farm animals would occupy the lower floor, allowing heat to drift up and warm the resident family above. And when it comes to architecture that has proven itself worthy, the chalet is the golden-ager of structures.

The interior is hard-wearing but luxurious, from the ski-boot-friendly brick flooring on the ground level, to the Nordic-inspired exposed fir wood frame. Spaces throughout are generous, with soaring ceilings on the top floor and walls of glass providing views to the slopes and river valley. Historically, chalets were built with wood that was native to their surroundings.

Chalet house plans are very similar to a-frame home plans, as both sport the classic A-shaped roof, which is perfect for shedding snow in the winter. Both types of plans also offer great outdoor living areas, like decks, porches, balconies, and more on which to enjoy the surrounding land. The main difference between Chalet house plans and a-frame home plans is ornamentation.

Whether preserved in their pure European-style state or reinterpreted into more contemporary renditions, occupants of a chalet are in for a unique way of living that cannot be fostered in most residences. Think cozy, timber-clad spaces, vaulted ceilings, and huge picture windows that bring the outdoors in. While these structures are almost instantly identifiable, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to identifying what makes a chalet. We’ve tapped University of Notre Dame assistant professor Kate Chambers to learn more about these quaint architectural gems.

Chalet plans sport a little extra flare, like whimsical rails that frame the deck or porch, or a "wiggle board" design on the eaves (i.e. instead of having a straight A shaped roof, the edges of the A might be slightly curved). While Chalet house plans can easily serve as primary residences, they are often used as vacation homes--usually on lots with a view of the mountains. Indoor construction in a controlled environment means exterior finishes are completed last, instead of first.

The new owner has expressed interest in using portions of the site for shipping container storage. Not only is this a loss for so many who love Alpine Village, it is also a lost opportunity. We press upon the new owner to work with the community and to find a way to maintain the existing use to the greatest extent possible. This hotel offers free parking, wifi, and breakfast, and is close to family activities. With free parking, Wifi, breakfast, and a pool on site, this hotel probably has it all for a family trip to the mountains.

These rustic shelters, reminiscent of quaint villages in the Swiss Alps, appeal to a primordial need to curl up beside an open fire, enveloped in fur throws with a hot toddy, enjoying views of some secluded wooded landscape. Which brings us to the San Fernando Valley, once the place of ranchos and fields and farms, and a blank slate for thousands of houses. In his book “Granada Hills,” Jim Hier reproduces a 1926 tract plan for the new town, with hundreds of lots of different sizes on yardstick-straight streets marked with the ages and types of orange trees (“5-year-old Valencia”). If you can afford it (and many can’t, a topic not being dealt with here), the impulse that brought millions to live in Southern California also bequeathed us a landscape ornamented with marvelous houses. Houses as delightfully kooky as a neighborhood designed by Tim Burton by way of Gaudí. The sale of Alpine Village and potential demolition led the Conservancy and Friends of Alpine Village to press for the Village to be designated a County historic landmark.

Family Resort offers unique experiences including beautiful lodging, award-winning meals, as well as proximity to family activities. Give that reclaimed wood bench multiple layers of plush sheepskins, and supply copious amounts of denim-covered pillows that are both comfortable and not too fussy about stains. And lighting, of course, is the difference between firelight glow and uncomfortable illumination. Give your space some sensual warmth with a pair of dimly lit sconces or table lamps with lighting temperatures so warm they mimic the firelight.

Alpine Village was designated a County historic landmark by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. It is the first legacy business to be designated a historic landmark in the County of Los Angeles. In July 2019, the Conservancy learned that Alpine Village was for sale and potentially threatened with substantial demolition.

This is true whether the components are assembled to make a window or entire modular homes. They haven’t the scaled-down pretensions of two-bedroom mock-Spanish haciendas. It may be a soulless landscape to some, but in Southern California, to its pilgrims, a house of one’s own is a holy land indeed, even to this day. Since a traditional chalet house features that dramatic pitched roof (and therefore not a lot of straight walls) and a lofted second level, storage like closets and wardrobes can be hard to squeeze in. Its occupants often rely on dressers, floating shelves, and other creative storage solutions to meet their needs.
